Phil Jackson recalls the voluminous amount of job offers upon graduation from college with a degree in marketing. “I was offered nine jobs out of college,” Jackson said. “But all of them were commission-based sales, and I didn’t want to live on commission.”
Jackson, now in his second year as principal at Laura Ingalls Wilder Intermediate School, currently earns his commissions in education, sometimes years after putting in the work. In one instance, a former student dropped by the campus where he worked as assistant principal, and personally invited him to attend his forthcoming high school graduation. “He told me I was the only person that truly believed in him so he wanted to personally thank me and give me the announcement that he did it.”
That belief and encouragement carries over to Jackson’s role as leader at Wilder, where he strives to ensure efficient operations, high-quality learning, and foster a positive campus culture. “I love the interactions with students, and love seeing teachers grow and become leaders themselves,” Jackson said.
Jackson obtained his Bachelor’s degree from UTSA, and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from UT-Permian Basin. His career in education began as a junior high math teacher and included stints as an elementary school math specialist, junior math department chair, and assistant principal for twelve years before being named principal at Wilder in 2021.
Jackson is married to Heather and they are raising three sons: Kade, a senior at Byron P. Steele High School, Carter, who is a freshman at Steele HS, and Cole, who is currently a sixth-grader at Schlather Intermediate School.
