Ashley Hawk has worn many hats as an educator since entering the profession in 2008: teacher, facilitator, instructional coach, academic dean, assistant principal, and now in her third year as principal of O.G. Wiederstein Elementary School. But the one she values the most is that of a game-changer.

“Success will come in many forms as each student is different and has unique talent and gifts,” Hawk says. “It is my job to support teachers and cultivate students’ strengths and support opportunities for growth, not only in academic learning but social and emotional learning as well.”

Creating a culture of belonging at Wiederstein Elementary for students, families, teachers and staff begins with Hawk’s philosophy of valuing everyone who walks through the school doors. “We are a team and we all play a role in making our school successful everyday,” Hawks says. “We can celebrate our strengths and help each other when we need help. We are in this together.”

Hawk’s resolve as an educator is strengthened every time someone tells her how they have been positively impacted in some way at school. “There’s always room for growth. Students and staff grow every day and it is very rewarding.”

Hawk obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in Early Childhood from UTSA and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Lamar University. She is the mother of three children, Cameron (21), Isaac (14) and Jasmine (6).

Chelsey Stolle-Mertink is stepping into her third year as Wiederstein's Assistant Principal. She came to SCUC with vast experience in elementary education through her service in various roles on both a campus and district level. She prides herself on the personal experience teaching K-4th grades amongst all content areas. She speaks to the importance of education and the joy she experiences in her role. "Educators have such a profound impact on shaping our future—not only do we get the opportunity to grow students academically, but we get help shape good citizens."

Stolle attributes her drive to serve this community to people she gets to work with. "I believe in partnerships and, in education, partnerships are vital. Through shared goals with our educational community and stakeholders we are able to leverage resources, expertise, and perspectives ultimately making school more effective, inclusive, and aligned with the expectations of the real-world."

Growth for all guides Mrs. Stolle's work. "Even in the last ten years, education has changed so much. We have an obligation to continue to grow in our practice because kids deserve it." Creating a space where students are seen, celebrated, and safe is the lens in which Stolle leads. She emphasizes the importance of equity, collaboration, and innovation in education, striving to empower every student to reach their full potential.

Stolle obtained her Bachelor of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies with a focus on Early Childhood Development from Texas Lutheran University and her Master of Education in Educational Administration degree from Lamar University. Chelsey and her husband, Jeremy, look forward to continuing to put down roots in this community along with their fur babies—Dakota and Whitley.
