Lee Conn was always destined to become an educator. Her mother was a teacher, and as she calls it, “...my biggest inspiration and influence.” Now, in her second year as principal at Watts Elementary School, Conn persists in following that legacy of making a difference in the lives of the students and staff at her school.
She readily admits that she is a proponent of the Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CHK) training, designed to help build strong relationships and self-managing teams. “This is the CKH saying, and it is so true, ‘If you have a child’s heart, you have their mind,’” Conn said.
The process, undertaken by the Watts Elementary staff, provides the tools, as Conn describes, “to pause and make connections in our everyday interactions.” She adds, “It was one of the greatest moments (of my educational career and brought us closer together as a staff.”
Creating an environment that emphasizes positivity means Conn must do “pulse checks” on her campus, asking questions to ensure students continue to flourish academically, socially and emotionally. “Seeing staff and students grow is my biggest motivator,” she said. “Celebrating and highlighting the wins we have is critical.”
Conn began her education career in 2006 in the Richardson Independent School District after earning her Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University. While teaching, she obtained her Master’s degree from Lamar University. Her varied experiences include junior high teacher, assistant principal, her first stint as elementary school principal, and associate principal at the high school level, all before coming to SCUC to take the job at Watts ES for the 2022-2023 school year.
One of Conn’s biggest life experiences was making the varsity basketball team as a freshman when she attended Conroe High School. “At the time, 5A was the highest classification you could play as an athlete,” she said. “Freshman typically did not make varsity.” But Conn, as she described it, “lived in the gym” and played year-round. “I not only made the varsity team, I earned my letter jacket that year,” she said proudly.
Conn is the wife of Travis Conn and the mother of three children, son Eli and twin daughters Ally and Lily. She enjoys hiking and reading.
