Geri Pope recalls the moment she knew she was destined to become an educator. Her class at Samuel Clemens High School assigned her to support the Head Start program in Cibolo. Pope became attached to a young boy in the early learning and development program, whom she described as, “bright and filled with joy.” When the student missed an entire week of class, she discovered the boy was moved into a foster home. “It was at that moment that I never wanted to miss an opportunity to make a child feel loved and believed in,” Pope said.

That emotional epiphany led Pope to seek a career in education. where she started as a fourth-grade teacher in 2005 after earning her Bachelor’s degree from Texas State University. She became an assistant principal upon receiving her Master’s degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2007, and by 2013, had become the principal at Schertz Elementary School, where she continues to make the students on her campus feel loved and believed in.

“Serving the community I grew up in motivates and inspires me,” she said. “When I look into these children’s eyes, I see myself; I see my family.”

Meeting the needs of the Schertz ES students requires a “all hands on deck” approach from Pope and her entire staff. It has fostered a sense of togetherness that can only come with total commitment. “When we embrace each other to solve problems and celebrate successes, we build trust and lasting relationships,” she said.

Pope is always eager to embrace a way forward in her learning, be it personal or professional. “I believe success happens when we challenge ourselves to be courageous and commit to changing the world,” she said. One student at a time.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

I'm Steven Piles, an Assistant Principal at Schertz Elementary, and education runs in my family. Inspired by them, I pursued a Bachelor’s in Education and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Wayland Baptist University.

With over ten years of educational experience, eight of which were in the elementary classroom, and a knack for instructional leadership, I transitioned into administration to foster academic success and personal growth in students. As an Assistant Principal, I focus on creating a supportive, inclusive environment, and implementing programs to boost student engagement and staff development.

Outside of school, I enjoy camping outdoors and playing tennis with my friends and family.
