ESL Program Mission Statement

The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program in SCUCISD is to provide English language learners (ELLs) with language acquisition support and instruction to help them become proficient in English with respect that builds upon the unique cultural and linguistic attributes they bring to our learning community.

Advocacy to ensure equal educational access for ELLs and families;
Researched-based instructional practices;
Collaboration with all stakeholders (student, parents, educators, community members, etc.)

100% of ELLs will become better listeners, speakers, readers, and writers of the English language by increasing one English proficiency level each school year on the Texas English Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS).

Standards and PLDs

What are ELPS?

The English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) are a set of standards that all Emergent Bilinguals (EB), also known as (ELLs) and (LEP) students, should master as they acquire English proficiency. They can be broken down into four language domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The ELPS also help teachers plan instruction that will be developmentally appropriate for each Emergent Bilingual student.

What are PLDs?

The Proficiency Level Descriptors describe how well Emergent Bilinguals are able to perform linguistically at each proficiency level as defined by the state of Texas. There are four levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Advanced High. A link to the states PLDs can be found on this page.

Important ClassLink Apps for Emergent Bilingual support

Imagine Learning Language and Literacy

Students may access this program via ClassLink-

First, student will need to login to their ClassLink account
Next, the student will need to click on the Imagine Learning Language and Literacy icon (purple robot)
Then, the student will need to enter their Username and Password for Imagine Learning
Last, the student will need to complete 20-30 minutes per session, at least two times per week

The student should have the login information. The ESL teacher and the ELAR teacher will have this information as well.

The program will time them out automatically after their goal time has been met for the session.

The student can use this program with any device that has a built-in mic and speaker, or with a headset that has a mic.

The program will automatically assess the student at the beginning, middle, and end of year.

The program will send automatic alerts to the ESL teacher regarding any areas of concern, so that the teacher can target the areas of intervention needed to best meet the needs of the student.
