If there were ever any moments of doubt Windi Hughes during her odyssey as an educator, she has always been able to lean on the words of wisdom imparted to her by her late grandmother, Ruby, shortly after Hughes became the first of her eleven grandchildren to earn a college degree and then take aim at a Master’s degree.
“If it was easy everyone would do it,” Ruby told Hughes. “You were made to do hard things and help others accomplish their dreams.”
Since then, Hughes has done everything possible as an educator to live up to those lofty expectations, and now she is using those words to lead as the newest principal at Dobie Junior High School. “If you make a difference in the life of even one child, you are part of positive change,” Hughes says. Taking it a step further, she believes building up the staff is equally important. “If you help one adult make professional growth, then you are impacting the lives of so many more children.”
The first ten years of her career were spent in Early Childhood, first as a teacher, and then as an Early Childhood Development Center Director. Shifting to public education in 2007, Hughes has served as a teacher and coach, Interventionist, and 504/Response to Intervention Coordinator. The past three school years spent as assistant principal at Dobie JHS enabled Hughes to settle into her role. “I believe that creating a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions and are eager to get involved fosters growth and a sense of belonging.”
Education is woven into Hughes’ family, as her husband Greg, is an educator, and her daughter, Whitnie, serves as a second grade teacher. She has two sons, Beaux and Truett.
